The Pakistan Cricket Board ( PCB ) has decided not to renew the contract of women’s national team head coach Muhammad Wasim following a disappointing outing in the ongoing Women’s ODI World Cup in India. Pakistan endured a dismal tournament, failing to win a single match out of the seven they played. Four ended in losses, while the remaining three were abandoned due to rain, leaving the side seventh in the eight-team standings. Their position could slip further if Bangladesh manage a win in their final fixture.
PCB insiders revealed that Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was unhappy with the team’s overall performance and Wasim’s inability to bring visible improvement. Appointed last year, the former cricketer’s stint was marked by inconsistency and missed opportunities. Under his guidance, Pakistan crashed out of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup semi-final against Sri Lanka and managed just one win from four matches at the Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

Despite his background as a batter, Wasim was unable to strengthen Pakistan’s batting unit, which remains the team’s weakest link in global tournaments. Reports also suggested that his working relationship with other support staff members was strained, with some describing him as unapproachable.
According to PTI, the PCB is now exploring the option of appointing a foreign coach to lead the side and bring in a fresh perspective. An official announcement regarding the new appointment is expected in the coming days as the board aims to reset the direction of women’s cricket in Pakistan.
