Seth Meyers on Thursday mocked Donald Trump for what he called the president’s “so maddening” habit of moving from weighty issues like military operations to trivial matters such as food in Washington, DC.
The “Late Night” host highlighted clips from Trump’s recent press conferences, including one in which the US president claimed that restaurants in the capital were “dying” and “nobody wanted to go out.”
Trump made the claim while defending his decision to federalise the police force and deploy national guard troops in Washington. He said, “Friends of mine that haven’t gone to a restaurant in four years, one of them went out five times in the last two weeks.”
Meyers immediately questioned the claim with a quip, “Who’s your friend, Guy Fieri?” He then imitated Trump, joking, “Thanks to me, all the restaurants are safe! The diners, the drive-ins, the dives!”
Meyers further shifted to public health, criticising GOP-led moves to challenge vaccine mandates. He covered health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s advisory committee, filled with vaccine sceptics, which is considering changing access to basic vaccines for measles, mumps, and rubella. The host also played a clip of Mehmet Oz, now head of the centers for medicare and medicaid Services, supporting Florida’s plan to end school vaccine mandates.
“I’m so excited for the return of measles, mumps, tuberculosis, typhoid, whooping cough and rubella! I’m being sarcastic,” Meyers said. He added a joke on rubella, saying he didn’t even know what it was and comparing it to one of the supposedly “saved” DC restaurants.
