Jannik Sinner , the Italian world No. 1 tennis player, shared a hard-to-believe promise he made to his parents when he was very young. He said he would stop playing tennis unless he made it into the top 200 by age 23 or 24, because his family didn’t have much money. He revealed this during a press talk before the US Open, just after he had to leave the Cincinnati Open final due to illness. He is now preparing for the US Open and aiming to get well soon to start his singles match, which is set for August 25.

Jannik Sinner opened up that when he was younger and starting his career, he told his parents:
"I remember what did I say to my parents? I was younger when when I left home, but I said if I'm with 23 or 24 in around not under the, the top 200, I would stop, you know, to play because we cannot afford it, you know, with the money what we have. And it costs a lot of money to travel around the, the tournaments. And if you have a coach or, you know, I was very lucky to when I was already 18 that I started to earn my money and I felt already safe," said Jannik Sinner.”
He said it costs a lot to travel and hire coaches.
He also said he was lucky that by age 18 he began earning his own money and felt safe. It’s powerful that even as a child, Sinner felt the weight of his family’s finances, yet he made it through hard times and blossomed into the world’s top tennis star.

At the Cincinnati Open final on August 18 in Ohio, Sinner faced Carlos Alcaraz but fell sick. He was down 5–0 in the first set and had to retire after just 23 minutes of play. Carlos Alcaraz, the Spaniard, won the title but showed deep respect and called Sinner a “true champion.”

Jannik Sinner apologized to the fans: “"Usually I start with the opponent but today I have to start with you guys. I’m super super sorry to disappoint you. From yesterday I didn’t feel great. I thought I would improve during the night. It came up worse. I tried to come out and make it at least a small match but I couldn’t handle more. I’m very very sorry for all of you. I know some of you on Monday maybe had to work or do something else, so I’m very very sorry," said Jannik Sinner.”
He also decided to withdraw from the US Open mixed doubles event with Katerina Siniakova to focus on getting healthy for his singles matches.
But he’s confident: Jannik Sinner later said he felt much better and expected to recover fully for the US Open’s start.
