What links a Sudanese murderer who danced to celebrate fatally stabbing a 27-year-old innocent woman 23 times with a screwdriver, a Somalian who randomly murdered an innocent restaurateur who was waiting in a bank to get money to pay his staff and an Ethiopian paedophile who preyed on a 14-year-old girl who was wearing her school uniform? Tragically there's every likelihood you know the answer already. They are ALL asylum seekers who entered the country illegally and were given everything from hotel rooms to cash handouts by a supine government too stricken with liberal, hand-wringing fear to take any decisive action.
A recent newspaper investigation revealed in the first six months of this year a total of 339 crimes such as sexual assault, possession of firearms and knives and actual and grievous bodily harm heard in our courts all involved people from other countries being housed in asylum hotels - who we're putting up at a cost of around £7 million A DAY!
Since records began seven years ago, it is estimated around 187,000 people have arrived here via those small boat crossings - for context, that's greater than the population of Middlesbrough - and it appears we know precious little about the background of virtually all of them.
Indeed, Haybe Cabdiraxmaan, the Somalian found guilty of murdering the restaurant owner in a bank in Derby last May, had been on a one-man crime spree across much of Europe before arriving illegally just 12 months ago. He'd been arrested and was wanted for crimes including assault, robbery, drunkenness and vandalism in Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Germany. But none of that stopped him being allowed into the UK and applying for asylum.
The last Conservative government tried to get the Rwanda deportation scheme off the ground and while far from perfect, it seems crystal clear now it did have the deterrent effect on the beaches of Calais the Tories claimed. One of Labour's first actions was to cancel it and the number of arrivals is now at an all-time high; 36,954 and greater than for the whole of last year.
Labour chose to replace it with hollow promises to "Smash the Gangs," ensure greater cooperation with the French and set up a new Border Security Command, proving once again the truth of that old policing adage, "If in doubt, form a squad!"
The first duty of any government is to protect its citizens and uphold national security, but don't expect that any time soon from the current crew, as it's led by a prime minister who has had a lifetime working in human rights and who you can imagine goes to bed with a copy of the European Convention on his nightstand.
Along with holiday catalogues for Tui and British Airways, as lIfe's a lot easier for "Never-Here Keir" when he's thousands of miles away.
As our politicians continue to lecture us that it is "jumping on the far right bandwagon" or even "racist" to worry about the safety of our children, we'll just watch as another legion of undocumented, unknown, mostly young males arrive from countries with cultures vastly different to ours and our politicians will remain hopelessly out of touch - but regrettably not out of office.
