Mary Berry makes death admission as she shares 'secret to longevity'

Former Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry has opened up about her longevity admitting she has good genes and her mother lived into her 100s, saying she is grateful for it at the age of 90. The star also shared the secrets of remaining fit and healthy as a nonagenarian.

"My mother was 105 when she died, so I've got pretty good genes. I'm immensely grateful for that," she said before revealing a surprising tip she "swears by" for long life - a glass of wine daily. "Oh yes. The glass has become slightly bigger," she admitted. "I don't drink until the evening, and then one glass of white will last me," she said. She also cites walking her beloved dogs and croquet as an integral part of her keep fit routine which keeps her sprightly in her 10th decade. "My fitness routine is to walk the dogs. Darcey and Freddie are working cocker spaniels."

She also revealed croquet allows her to spend quality time with her husband of 59 years Paul Hunnings.

They indulge their love of the sport at Phyllis Court, a private members' club near their home in Henley-on-Thames.

"My husband is better than me, he's a sportsman who played rugger for Saracens," she told Saga magazine.

"He's 93 but he decided to play croquet, so I said I'd play too. I'm not as good as him, but it's something we do together, which is great," she said.

Mary celebrated her birthday on March 24 this year surrounded by family including Paul, her children Annabel and Thomas, and her five grandchildren.

She also used the occassion to join Instagram and quickly garnered an impressive 233,000 followers on the social media platform.

Not one to rest on her laurels the culinary legend also released a new cookbook entitled Mary 90: My Very Best Recipes.

She is also front a brand new BBC Two series Mary at 90: A Lifetime of Cooking which sees her joined by household names as she takes them on a gastronomic journey through her life.
