1. Khoya (Mawa)Khoya demand spikes during Diwali for making traditional sweets. However, it is often adulterated with starch, flour, semolina, and sometimes hydrogen peroxide to maintain a fresh appearance longer. To check, rub the khoya in your hands for excessive oil and smell for any chemical odor. Using iodine tincture is an effective method—if adulterated, the khoya will show a color change.
2. Paneer (Cheese)Paneer is another item prone to adulteration with harmful substances like urea, synthetic milk, starch, detergents, and formalin. A quick test involves applying iodine tincture: pure paneer won’t change the tincture’s color, while adulterated paneer will turn black. Also, soaking paneer in water—cloudy water may indicate adulteration. Taste testing can also help detect off-flavors.
3. Silver Work (Chandi Ka Vark)The silver foil used to decorate sweets can be adulterated with cheaper metals. Test the foil by burning a small piece—authentic silver burns with a bright shine, while adulterated foil produces black smoke or dull burn.

Turmeric powder adulterated with colorants will cause the water to turn yellow and cloudy even after settling. Salt mixed with chalk reacts by forming bubbles when lemon juice is added.
