The India Meteorological Department ( IMD) has issued an orange alert for Pune's Ratnagiri and Raigad districts on Monday, warning of intense rainfall over the next 24 hours, according to a TOI.
The IMD has also maintained a yellow alert for ghat regions of Pune district on Monday, along with similar alerts for Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Vidarbha till Thursday.
Officials told TOI that conditions are turning favourable for the southwest monsoon to begin its withdrawal from parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Gujarat in the next few days.
The weather office informed the news outlet that the current spell of rain is linked to a low-pressure system over north Telangana and adjoining Vidarbha, which is also extending across parts of south Madhya Maharashtra.
The system is expected to sustain widespread rainfall activity across large swathes of the state in the coming days.
Steady showers in Pune
The alert comes after Pune city and its surrounding areas saw intermittent rain through Saturday night and Sunday. Several parts of the city and Pimpri Chinchwad were lashed by heavy showers, accompanied by lightning and thunder.
Chinchwad recorded the heaviest rainfall at 69mm between Saturday morning and Sunday evening. Other observatories registered comparatively lower amounts, including Shivajinagar (13.8mm), Talegaon (15mm), Hadapsar (13.5mm), and Magarpatta (10mm). The rain has also benefitted the dams supplying water to Pune. The Varasgaon catchment received 21mm of rainfall, Panshet 20mm, and Temghar 3mm. As of now, the combined storage of the four reservoirs stands at 29.09 TMC, nearly 100% of their designed capacity.
