Economic offences emerge as a growing concern in India’s metropolitan cities, with the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) showing a 30.9% jump to 41,220 cases in 2023 from 31,501 in 2018. Most offences involved losses between `1-10 lakh, though frauds worth crores were not uncommon.

The crime rate in cities stood at 36.1 per lakh population in 2023. Nearly 9 in 10 cases involve forgery, cheating, and fraud. While the number of cases have increased in recent years, court disposals have slightly eased pendency.
